Our Masters programme is a highly focused, in-depth programme in economics suited to students wishing to develop the tools and skills needed to undertake research for a PhD or to move directly into a career as a professional research economist. By the end of the course students should be proficient in state-of-the-art analytical and quantitative techniques that are the essential skills of a professional economist. The programme offers taught post graduate Masters degrees in MSc Economics and MSc Economics (Finance).
Students will take core subjects and three optional courses from a wide range of subject areas. These options cover virtually all the main research areas in modern economics and one usually forms the basis for the summer dissertation. The following are the main element of the MSc Degree:
- preliminary courses in Maths and Econometrics (mid-September to early October)
- six core courses, two each in Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, and Quantitative Methods (October to mid February)
- residential methodology weekend (January)
- three option courses (End February to early April)
- dissertation (due in August)

Teaching on the MSc courses is based in Edinburgh at the University of Edinburgh, and students graduate with an MSc from the University of Edinburgh.

International Students
Edinburgh welcomes and supports over 8,000 students from around the globe. The Programme's MSc year is similarly cosmopolitan. The average number of students on the programme (MSc Economics and MSc Economics (Finance) combined) is 62. Roughly 30% are EU & UK and the rest come from overseas. Of the overseas students about 25% are Chinese with the rest from a range of countries such as Afganistan, Azerbaijan, Ghana, Iceland, India, Mexico, Nigeria Pakistan, Turkey, Ukraine and the US.

Life on the MSc
For the duration of the MSc course, students are registered at the University of Edinburgh and so become members of the Scottish academic community. The Masters degree is a demanding and challenging course, yet with close interactions among students and staff, support is close at hand. The workload is continuous but manageable. The mathematics component is thorough and supported by a weekly help-desk, which has been well utilised by past students and is seen as a valuable resource. The MSc programme makes extensive use of the virtual learning environment,WebCT.
